Character Name:Charles Vane
Series: Black Sails
Age: 30ish
From When?: After having lost his ship and crew, when Noonan captures him in a back alley and puts a pistol to his head. In the show the shot misfires, but I am going with that it didn't.
Inmate/Warden:
Inmate. Charles needs to change pretty much everything at this point. There is a good man under there but at this point in the series, that guy is pretty much invisible. Vane is a feared pirate captain, so much so that other captains will back down at the mention of his name. He is selfish, has a huge ego and also almost no morals. At this point in the show what morals he does have made a brief appearance and then cost him his crew. Vane is smart and passionate however and working with a warden can make him realize that he can do better. One of the things he needs to learn is that not every slight requires a response that is greater than the slight. Some do not require any response.
Arrival:Brought here against his will.
Abilities/Powers: Human but a very good fighter.
Personality:Charles Vane is well known and feared, both for his cunning and for his vicious temper. And he revels in that fear, using it to lead his men and to get what he wants out of others. It is even shown that he enjoys scaring others and seeing the effect just his name has on them. But the fear is also very justified. When people cross Charles he tends to lash out hard against them. This is shown as everything from putting Low's head on a stick with a note that he angered Charles to crucifying Guthrie when it becomes clear that he is betraying them to the English. He does other things as well, such as not stopping his men when they decide to keep one of Nassau's whores, Max, as a sex slave because she owes them money.
Charles thinks with his fists, he is one of the best fighters in the entire series. And he won't mind fighting dirty at all. Both when it comes to physical fights or trying to get rid of people he doesn't like. When we first see him in the show he is trying to rig a vote for captain against Flint and he nearly succeeded at that, his guy would have won had it actually come to a vote. His men are also known for their cruelty, something else he is feared for. Vane puts a lot of stock in being seen as strong. Or judges people, including himself, for being weak. He truly believes that might makes right. When Eleanor slaps him he punches back because she made him look weak in front of his men. That being said when a fight is over it is over. Later in the series when he is a prisoner he goads Eleanor into hitting him to prove to her that she is the sort of person who would strike someone in chains.
Vane is a passionate man, and one of, if not the primary motivations he has is freedom. Having spent his childhood as a slave it is the thing he wants the most and for most of the time, he refuses to be broken. He also wants the same for Nassau and the people within her. When Nassau steals slaves to rebuild the fort he works alongside them, doing back-breaking labour. There is a good man somewhere under all the layers of no morals. Or rather it isn't that he doesn't have morals it is more than he has his own set of them and doesn't really answer to anyone else's morals.
One of the things others might notice really easily about him is that he is defiant as fuck. At one point he has to go ask Eleanor Guthrie for more jobs for his crew and it looks like it physically hurts him. At the point in canon, he is coming into the game from he is very much a broken man. Eleanor has outplayed him and made him appear weak. This has caused him to have a bit of a break where he spends days drinking and smoking various things, including opium. At that point being whisked away to somewhere so different than what he knows he will take some time getting his head around that situation and also getting back to his old self.
Despite caring about his freedom and on the larger scale the freedom of Nassau, Charles is not a good man. As mentioned above he does let his men keep Max as a sex slave. In his mind he didn't have a choice, if he or his men has been wronged he has to answer with equal or greater force. This is later repeated in the series when he puts a black mark on Jack and Anne for killing what is left of the crew, making them unable to find another crew to join up with. Turning the other cheek is not something Vane is familiar with, instead, he believes in punching back, harder so that everyone watching will know not to hit him in the first place. There are some very strong implications in the show that Charles himself has also been abused sexually when he was a slave and that might hit him hard once he starts to realize that what he allowed to happen to Max was not too different than that. As we see with the reaction when he loses the Ranger he can be self-destructive when he feels lost which might lead to fights or drug use depending on what kind of support structure and friends he has when it happens.
Barge Reactions:I suspect that some things will hit him differently than others. Learning about the future of pirates or about how he actually dies later in his story will upset him because a free Nassau is important to him. Meeting non-humans will also confuse him and possibly scare him, but he will learn to deal with it. The whole structure of the barge will most likely be confusing as well and he is likely to resist a warden's attempts at reforming him. The events might vary greatly depending on what happens. I could see him actually enjoying some of them, such as the ones where he feels he is back in his element, but others, possibly the ones where he is changed a lot, he will at least seem to hate.
When it comes to the barge itself he will have opinions on things, like the admiral hiding away. Being a pirate, Charles is from a world where the captain is very much part of the crew. He will be amazed at how the ship works and all the things stuffed onto a ship. Like seriously, a bar! And also the fact that it never has to go to port for water or food. I think he will enjoy the enclosure a lot, getting to feel like he is back on the ocean.
Path to Redemption:
It is most likely going to be a long one. Charles is smart and fearless and also fiercely independent as well as incredibly defiant. But he is smart and willing to listen to reason when he is in a good mood. One of the things he does want is freedom, both for himself and for Nassau, this is something that can be used to get him to listen to make an effort to change. Especially once he figures out how trapped he is on the barge.
He is also willing to put his own feelings aside for a bigger goal as shown by him saving Flint in the show. This is something that can be used to nurture his morals back into being. In the show, he does it because he gets something he wants out of it but if he were to do something like that without getting something out of it that would be a huge step towards redemption. To be redeemed, Charles needs to not only have morals but also live by them even when it isn't obviously beneficial to him. He also needs to learn to let things go and not always retaliate.

[Vane was sitting in the enclosure, on what looks like a beach. Behind him, there is sand and the blue of the ocean. It is a clear, beautiful blue, almost unreal. There is a small boat with a sail where the sea meets the beach, waves coming up around it.]
So, yeah that was something. Seems like the admiral fucked us again. Or he is an inept captain. We really need one that knows how to steer a ship. Heck for that matter we need a crew that knows what they are doing. Back where I am from this ship would have been a goner so fucking fast. Either way, fuck him. Fuck this whole place. If you ask me there is only two good things on this boat, the bar and the enclosure,
[He shakes his head and motion to the boat behind him]
But before that all happened, some people mentioned wanting to learn to sail. I'll teach you.

RE: Keeping Max as a sex slave:
First and foremost when it comes to the handling of this, I do not condone or excuse Vane's actions when it comes to how he handled that. He has his reasons for it but I do not agree with them one bit and agree that he deserves to be made aware of how wrong they are. I do not intend for these issues to come up much, I believe it is possible to focus on a lot of his other transgressions and areas of growth, he has plenty of those. That is not to say this is an area where he needs to see the error of his ways but rather that it does not need to be the main focus. I do prefer plenty of ooc communication anyway and if these issues are something that might come up it is something I want to talk to my rp partners about ooc before anything happens ic.
