Alright. Let's start with sailing since I find it easier to teach. It is stuff like figuring out what rope goes where and stuff like that. Most ships have the same basic layout there and it is important to know that when a captain says to take in the fore stay you know what rope to pull.

That sounds slightly less stressful than other things you could be teaching. I have a question, though.

Do I need to wear shoes?

That is up to you, but most people do. Some people who climb the rigging a lot like to not wear them, but I have always done it.
