[At some point, Vane will return to his rooms to find a gift. It's a rapier, well-made and elegantly designed. The steel shines brightly when he pulls it from the scabbard, and while there's nothing so fussy as filigree on the handle and guard, the curve of the knuckle bow is graceful and beautiful, forming a cage to protect the hand. The only bit of flash is the pommel, a deep, arresting sapphire blue, though on close inspection it seems to be a well-polished stone, not an actual gem. There's no note.]

Vane studies the gift for a long moment, then he picks it up and gives it a few swing, grinning. It is a beautiful blade and good to use as well. He heads down to the training area to give it a test run and after that, he can be found with it on his hip pretty much always.

[ Vane plays the recording over a few times, listening to the words. by now he has gotten sceptical about the whole warden thing, given that his last one had gotten demoted. That being said there was something he wanted that this guy might be able to get him. ]

No need to be so formal. Just Vane works. Rhys, my last warden, was in the process of getting me a job but it seems like he was unable to do so. Maybe that is something you could help with.

Vane blinks, he hadn't expected visitors, but he pulls on a pair of pants and makes his way over to open the door.

Well, that was not what Vane had expected at all. Certainly not from Beau. But he spends the next day looking around the markets until he something he figures is a decent gift in response.

The next evening he makes his way to Beau's ship, asking for her specifically. In his hands is a pair of handknitted deep blue mittens he had bought of a fairy. The Fairy had claimed it was wool from some animal Vane had never heard about but the important part was that they were warm. There were extra pieces of wool inside, making them even warmer. He figures they'd be perfect for a cold night on watch.

[This is the first of two letters that arrive for Vane. This one is attached to a sack of gold and is delivered by pixie-courier under the official Snuffbox letterhead.]

M. Vane,

Enclosed you will find your yearly Yuletide compensation. You are receiving an assistant managerial promotion and a pay grade increase for your work.

Vane blinks, looking at the letter and then looking back at the pile of gold. Well that was a welcome surprise. He smiles slightly as he takes it and then opens the tome to write a quick little reply.

"Hi. I figure the same schedule as now works fine, unless you have other plans."

[This second letter is of a more... personal nature. This one is slipped under Vane's door, and it is written on plain paper and sealed with a standard wax stamp. Wrapped in with the letter is a gift card to the local Starbucks and a receipt for the coffee-maker that now resides permanently at the snuffbox, paid in full from Javert's pocket.]

This is a conversation ill-suited to a professional setting. I dislike letters, and if you wish to hear this from my face, you are invited to come at my door during my off-hours. I will answer.

I have been hard with you. It is unjust to be so without placing a significant share of the blame on myself.

I did not ask if you were presently engaged or involved. I did not care to know, and I took what I wanted anyway. That grave misstep lies with me.

It takes a while before Vane responds. Mostly because he had been talking to Silver. But eventually, he comes knocking on Javert's door, the letter in his hand. You don't have to know him well to see that he is uncomfortable but he does give Javert a nod.

He’s sliding Vane’s favorite kind of rum and a packet of Mellowlark into his room when a noise makes him freeze. If he doesn’t move, he’s invisible.
