Well, that was not what Vane had expected at all. Certainly not from Beau. But he spends the next day looking around the markets until he something he figures is a decent gift in response.
The next evening he makes his way to Beau's ship, asking for her specifically. In his hands is a pair of handknitted deep blue mittens he had bought of a fairy. The Fairy had claimed it was wool from some animal Vane had never heard about but the important part was that they were warm. There were extra pieces of wool inside, making them even warmer. He figures they'd be perfect for a cold night on watch.
When Beau arrived, she clapped her hand on Vane's shoulder. "Sup Charles. One of my serving wenches said you were asking for me. What can I do for you?"
Taking the box curiously, Beau started to open it. "Hope you like it. That's some of the best wine from my home world. We're talking easily fifty gold a bottle."
Seeing the mittens, she smiled and tried them on. "These are nice. Thanks, man. You know how hard it is to find hand warmers that fit over my gloves and wraps comfortably that isn't something ridiculous like a hot loaf of bread?" She paused a moment. "Don't ask. Or do, but ask Caleb; it was his dumb thing."
Vane smiles and opens his mouth to say something when the bit about the hot loaf hits him. And he raises an eyebrow. "Are you serious?" For all that he knows she is pulling his tail.
With a completely serious look on Beau's face, she nodded. "Yes. That actually happened once. We thought he was going to eat the fresh loaf, but-- Ask him."
"Most people didn't live on the streets in a cold climate for a few years trying to scrape by." Beau didn't really worry about telling Vane that tidbit of Caleb's history since the beggar bit was mostly by design.
Vane shrugs. "Fair, I just know where I grew up warm bread would have been far too much of a luxury to use like that. It would have been eaten far too fast."
"It's not like it didn't get eaten. Just not eaten while hot." Beau shook her head. "Anyway, he can reason that shit to you. I thought it was fucking stupid. But these mittens? They're pretty dope. Thanks, Charles."
Vane nods. "I might ask him next time I see him. Haven't talked with him much lately." And he smiles at her being excited about the mittens. "Just let me know when you need help on the ship. I am itching to climb rigging again, which I never thought I'd say."
"You can always come by on the First to teach my new quartermaster how to handle the sails." Beau smirked a little. "I've decided to let Quentin stay."
"Yeah? Not sure if he has the makings for it but that will be interesting to see. Maybe he surprises me." After all, Vane had been really drunk when they met. Maybe Quentin was rather different than that.
"Whether he's suited for it or not doesn't matter; he needs to learn," Beau pointed out. "Besides, he has magic so maybe that will help him somehow. Regardless, I'd appreciate you doing so. If he's especially difficult to teach, I'll throw some extra coin in the payment."
"If you'd rather work for me, I certainly need another bartender since Nick was sent home. As far as daily duties go," Beau replied. "But I am not going to stand having that man accuse me of poaching employees. I will break his nose if he does so. But the position is open."
Beau raised an eyebrow. "Javert is mad at you and yet you got a promotion. And him being mad at you has you considering jumping ship. Do I even want to know what the issue is?"
Spoilers: Beau always wants to know. That doesn't mean she won't regret knowing, but the monk was nosy as fuck.
Yeah, Beau regretted this one. It wasn't so much that she didn't think Javert wasn't having sex in the Feywilds (it was hard not to) as much as she preferred not having confirmation that anyone wanted to fuck that. Sure, she didn't get why anyone would want to fuck a dude in general, but she did understand that was just her. But Javert...
And then she frowned. Ugh, she didn't like this feeling. Didn't like that she was going to say anything that could be construed as her defending Javert, but... fuck.
"That was kind of a dick move - not telling him or any of your other regular fucks. It's one thing to have an open relationship, but engagement and marriage kinda is a real big fucking deal to some people. Especially old fuckers, like him." Beau sighed. "Yeah, you made your bed and now you gotta lay in it there."
Vane shook his head. "I didn't know it was going to be such a big deal to so many people." He shrugs.
But he isn't going to fight her on it, he is tired of fighting about this. Instead, he shrugs again and then gives her a little smile. "Thanks for the wine Beau, I'll see you around."
"It's just engagement and marriage implies long-term commitment. Some people don't like being a side piece." Beau shrugged as well. She's fucked married women before, but the knowing beforehand was important. Finding out afterward had not been fun.
"Anyway, thanks for the mittens. See you around, Charles."
