Vane smiles and nods and pushes the door open. And right on the other side of the door is a very happy young puppy. "Easy Jack, easy." Vane laughs and bends to pick up the young puppy. "Jack, meet Harry, Harry meet Jack."
Harry forces a look of carelessness on his face, though if Vane was watching he'd see a look of surprised glee and wonder just before he's wiped it off.
"How long'v you had a dog?" he asks, offering a hand for Jack to smell like he doesn't care if he likes how he smells.
Jack sniffs like his life depends on it and then paws at Harry to get to climb into his arms. "Not long, I think he was a Yule gift from the fae. His name is Jack."
"Jack? Clever as fuck, a good first mate. Scrawny. A lot of people underestimated him because of that." He walks over to where he keeps the bottles of wine and pours two glasses.
Whaat no Harry isn't calling Vane not-clever he's....calling him....difficult to underestimate? No, he also knows how easy it is for people to underestimate you when all they think you are is a thug.
He makes himself at home in a seat, one leg hooked over an arm rest.
Vane just raises an eyebrow. But he doesn't say anything. He has been called worse by people he liked less. Instead, he just settles into the chair as he sips the wine.
"Do you want to stop hooking up?" Better get straight to the point and sine Havert's reaction he las learned not to take things for granted.
Harry pauses with his glass partway to his lips. “Why, do you?”
His voice is casual. Oh super casual. Of course Vane’s probably gotten bored with him and is making Harry be the one to end things, that’s what’s happening.
A slight tenseness in Harry's shoulders relaxes slightly when he hears Vane's answer, and he takes a generous drink of the wine.
"Oh, that?" He shrugs. "Nah. Ava said it wasn't going to stop her or you from sleeping around, so I figure it's one of those things. Isn't it?" If he'd only heard from the person he was fucking that their engagement was open then he'd be suspicious, but this seemed all right.
Vane nods. He is glad to hear that. He had been a little worried with how Javert had reacted. He grins wide and reaches down to pet Harry. "Good because I don't want to give up something good."
Harry hesitates before glancing up and grinning crookedly. "Yeah," he says. "What's not to like?"
He takes a drink of wine, raising his eyebrow right back at Vane. Nothing needs to change, it's fine. What they've got is good. Harry doesn't have to want more.
Vane looks at him for a long moment. Trying to read what the kid was trying to tell him. But he eventually decides to take him at his words and just nods. "Exactly. I don't want to lose you as a friend either." Because let's face it, Harry, if it wasn't for the dick, would you really be here?
Harry smiles at Vane, honestly surprised and pleased. He'd been pretty sure if it wasn't for his arse Vane wouldn't be interested in keeping him around--but here he is, actually calling him a friend.
"Well better start with the presents, my friendship doesn't come cheap," he says airily, tossing an arm over the back of his seat. He might have forgotten who he's talking to.

"Yeah, named him after my first mate."
